Cold Brew vs. Iced Coffee: What's the Difference?
They look the same in the glass, but they're not.
Iced coffee is hot-brewed coffee poured over ice. Fast, but the heat extracts bitter compounds — and the ice dilutes it further.
Cold brew is steeped in cold water for 12–24 hours. No heat means no bitterness, no acidity, just smooth, naturally sweet coffee concentrate that tastes completely different from anything you'd get at a café.
Once you try it, you won't go back.
The Basic Cold Brew Recipe
What you need:
- 1 cup coarse-ground coffee
- 4 cups cold filtered water
- Glass pitcher with filter
- Fine mesh strainer or paper filter
How to make it:
- Add coarse-ground coffee to your pitcher.
- Pour cold filtered water over the grounds. Stir gently to saturate.
- Cover and refrigerate for 18–24 hours. (12 hours minimum, 24 for stronger concentrate.)
- Lift the built-in filter or strain through a paper filter into a clean jar.
- Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Ratio tip: The 1:4 ratio makes a medium-strength brew. For concentrate (to mix with milk or water), use 1:2.
3 Ways to Drink It This Summer
1. Classic Black Cold Brew
Pour over ice in a double-wall latte glass. Nothing else. Let the coffee speak.
Best with: light to medium roast, fruity or floral notes.
2. Cold Brew Milk Latte
Fill your glass halfway with cold brew concentrate, top with oat milk or whole milk. Add one large ice cube. Stir slowly.
Best with: medium roast, nutty or chocolatey notes.
3. Brown Sugar Syrup Latte
Make a quick brown sugar syrup (1:1 brown sugar + hot water, cooled). Add 2 tbsp to your glass, pour cold brew, top with milk and ice.
Best with: dark roast. Rich, caramel-forward, and dangerously good.
The Right Glass Makes a Difference
Cold brew deserves a glass that keeps it cold without sweating all over your counter. Double-wall glasses trap the temperature inside — your drink stays cold, your hand stays dry, and the table stays clean.
The visual effect isn't bad either. Ice suspended in a clear double-wall glass looks exactly like what summer should feel like.
