The October Living Room: How to Make It Feel Like Autumn

The best part of an October living room might begin somewhere else: in the kitchen, while you’re making a cup of tea.

Outside, the light is changing. Inside, you have ten minutes, a warm drink, and somewhere comfortable to sit. You don’t need to redecorate the room to make it feel like autumn. Sometimes all it takes is bringing a little of the kitchen with you.

Begin with something warm

Make the drink you actually want: tea, coffee, or hot cocoa. Pour it into a stoneware mug that feels good to hold. The point isn’t to invent a seasonal recipe. It’s to give yourself a reason to pause before the evening gets busy.

If you’re sharing the moment, bring a second cup. If you’re on your own, make just one. Either way, start with a drink you’ll want to finish slowly.

Add a small bite

Slice an apple, add a few crackers, or bring out the cheese you already have in the fridge. A small bowl from a nesting porcelain serving set is enough for an afternoon snack. Leave the larger bowls for another meal; you don’t need to fill a table to make a moment feel generous.

This is also where the room starts to feel different. A drink and a little food give you a reason to sit down, rather than walk through the living room on your way to the next task.

Carry it all in one trip

Set the mug and bowl on a large brown serving tray before you leave the kitchen. Keep the arrangement simple, with plenty of room around the cup. This tray is oversized, so choose a spot where it can sit flat and securely.

One trip from kitchen to living room is all the setup you need. Put the tray down, bring over a book if you like, and let the room be lived in.

There’s no need to rearrange the furniture. Clear enough space on a sturdy coffee table for your tray, and keep what you’ll use within reach. A good October room isn’t a finished display; it’s a place where you can comfortably stay awhile.

Make room to linger

If you like to read long after your tea would usually go cold, a wood-finish mug warmer is one option. Use it according to its instructions on a stable table, with the cord and warm surface away from the sofa and blankets. It should make the evening easier, not add something you have to worry about.

Keep a throw nearby for when the temperature drops. A large woven basket beside the sofa gives it a place to go when you’re not using it, without making the room feel too carefully arranged.

That’s enough of a change for one evening. A warm cup, something good to eat, and a living room that’s ready for you. Autumn doesn’t have to arrive through new furniture or a box of decorations. Sometimes it comes in on a tray.
